National Philanthropy Day (NPD) is a special day set aside for the purpose of recognizing the great contribution philanthropy makes to our society – and to honor individuals and businesses active in the philanthropic community. NPD was the brain child of local philanthropist and attorney Doug Freeman. After five years of work and hundreds of letters, the idea garnered support from a number of community organizations. In 1986 President Ronald Reagan proclaimed November 15 as National Philanthropy Day. Since then, communities throughout the United States and Canada have joined together to honor the spirit of giving in their own regions. We believe that philanthropy benefits not only our own communities, but enriches and empowers the global community. NPD offers an opportunity to reflect on the meaning of charitable giving and the spirit that makes such generosity possible.

NPD is coordinated and supported on an international scale by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP). This highly respected trade organization promotes the ethical advancement of philanthropy through advocacy, research, education, and certification programs. We hope you will celebrate Orange County’s 23rd Annual National Philanthropy Day by registering to attend the Spirit of Philanthropy Awards Luncheon on Wednesday, November 19, 2008. We encourage you to nominate  a deserving philanthropist and/or organization that has demonstrated outstanding support and service in the community. Proceeds from the Spirit of Philanthropy Awards Luncheon provide scholarship and educational programs to the Orange County Chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals.
